Elko, Nevada Friday, Feb 26, 2010

We drove through the Great Salt Lake, and did not realize that there would be 75 miles with no gas stations! We were 30 miles away from a gas station when we were seriously running low on gas.  We had visions of having to get a ride to get gas by hitching a ride from some benevelent stranger! Dave even drafted behind a double semi to try to save what little gas we had.  We had never seen the gas gage dip so low!

We did make it to the gas station, and we were SO relieved!!

Arrived in Elko, NV around 8 pm, grabbed a fast food dinner, and crashed!

We are looking forward to arriving in the Sacramento area around 2 pm.

Day 1 Driving to San Diego via Sacramento Thursday, Feb 25, 2010

We left Andover, MN Thursday, Feb 25th at 5:30 am on the first leg of our journey to San Diego.  The temp was 5 below!  We are carrying Kathy's things to Sacramento in Terri's trailer.  (Thanks Terri!)

We have arrived at Paxton, Nebraska at 5:00 PM (SMT) for the night.  The drive was very relaxing.  We played movies on the DVD, so the time went quickly.

We went to dinner at Olie's Wild Game Restaurant...not that they serve wild game; they have all the wild animals the owner shot all over the world!  They pride themselves on getting the first liquor license in Nebraska in 1933 at midnight, the soonest they could open for business after prohibition was lifted!

If you are interested in some details of this ride, check out the WomanTours website!  This happens to be one of their cross-country rides, but there are many others all over the US and more!

This is the topography map leaving San Diego.  YIKES!!  Each line represents 40 miles.

Dave and I are driving out to San Diego for a fun road trip before I take off.  Since my dad passed away in January, my "other mother," Kathy is moving back to California to be nearer her children. We will miss her terribly, and we are having an intimate family dinner (only 28 of us!) for her today to wish her Bon Voyage!

Dave and I are packing my brother Ray's trailer with her things and driving them out to her in the Sacramento area.

So...

Feb. 25th, Dave and I will set out with the trailer packed with boxes, furniture, my bicycle, as well as Dave and son Erik's golf clubs and ski equipment.

The plan is to arrive in Sacramento Feb 27th, and help her daughter Lorrie and husband Clayton set up Kathy's apartment.  We will leave for San Diego Monday morning.  We will arrive in San Diego that evening, stay with daughter Shelley and her husband Shaun for a couple of days.

After a Woman Tours send-off dinner, on Friday, March 5th, I will take off from Dog Beach with the Woman Tour group.

Dave will then drive up to Anahiem to see his cousin, Jim Rowe.  Sunday he will drive to Las Vegas, pick up son, Erik, who will spend a few days golfing and whatever in Vegas.

Then Dave and Erik will drive over to the condo in Vail for skiing.  They will drive back home to Minnesota.

(Isn't it nice to be retired and have all this free time?)

Our route March 5 - April 30th
